Biography
Mr. Thomas graduated MB ChB from Nottingham University in 2008, and completed higher specialist training in the West Midlands (Coventry & Warwick), obtaining the FRCS (Tr & Orth). He underwent a further one year sub-specialist training in Perth, Western Australia, specialising in hip and knee replacement, revision hip and knee replacement as well as major joint reconstruction for benign and malignant musculoskeletal cancers. Mr. Thomas then spent a further 3 months at the prestigious Exeter Hip Unit specialising in primary and revision hip replacement as well as the short and long term management of hip trauma.

Mr. Thomas was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Princess of Wales Hospital in August 2023, following 18 months as a Consultant Hip and Knee Surgeon in West Dorset. Mr. Thomas' practice is split between the NHS and Private Practice at the Nuffield Hospital, Cardiff and Vale.
Mr. Thomas specialises in the surgical management of painful, arthritic hip and knee joints, as well as the management of painful and failing hip and knee replacements, including where appropriate, revision surgery to remedy the problem. At the Vale Hospital, Mr. Thomas is also pleased to offer advise, monitoring and where justified, surgery for benign musculoskeletal tumours.

Mr. Thomas' practice is focused on patient-led decision making and perfecting the patient experience. Where historically it was normal to spend 3-7 days in hospital following your hip or knee replacement, it is now completely safe and often preferable to patients to spend as little time in hospital as possible. Discharge on the day of surgery is safe for many patients and is a regular part of Mr. Thomas' practice, where this is your preference and in your best interests.

- 2022, Does functional planning, 3D templating and patient-specific instrumentation improve accuracy in total hip replacement?- a randomized controlled trial -
Debate continues as to the optimal orientation of the acetabular component in total hip arthroplasty (THA) and how to reliably achieve this. The primary objective of this study was to compare functional CT-based planning and patient-specific instruments with conventional THA using 2D templating.
- 2018, The outcome of secondary resurfacing of the patella following total knee arthroplasty: Results from the Trent and Wales Arthroplasty Register -
We sought to determine whether patients undergoing secondary patella resurfacing (SPR) benefited from the procedure by assessing postoperative satisfaction via a postal questionnaire.
