Meet Mr Thomas: Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
At the heart of Vale Hip and Knee is Mr Thomas, a highly respected Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a wealth of experience in complex joint surgery. Mr Thomas specialises in primary hip and knee replacements, the intricate management of painful or failing joint replacements and the assessment and treatment of benign musculoskeletal tumours.
His journey in medicine began at the University of Nottingham, where he graduated with his MB ChB in 2008. From there, he embarked on a rigorous path of higher specialist surgical training within the West Midlands rotation, covering Coventry, Warwick and Birmingham. During this time, he obtained his FRCS (Tr & Orth), solidifying his foundational expertise in orthopaedic and trauma surgery.
To offer his patients the highest standard of care, Mr Thomas pursued extensive subspecialist fellowship training across the globe:
Complex Adult Reconstruction Fellowship (Perth, Western Australia):
Between 2020 and 2021, Mr Thomas completed a year-long fellowship at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. Here, he focused heavily on complex hip and knee replacements, revision surgeries and major joint reconstruction for patients with benign and malignant musculoskeletal cancers.
Exeter Hip Fellowship (Devon, UK)
In 2021, he spent time at the prestigious Exeter Hip Unit. This globally recognised fellowship allowed him to refine his techniques in primary and revision hip replacements, as well as in the short and long-term management of complex hip trauma
Following 18 months serving as a Consultant Hip and Knee Surgeon in West Dorset, Mr Thomas was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Princess of Wales Hospital in August 2023. Today, he brings this vast, international experience directly to his patients in Wales
Mr Thomas’s Philosophy: Patient-Led Decision Making
At Vale Hip and Knee, Mr Thomas’s entire practice is built around patient-led decisionmaking. The best surgical outcomes happen when you feel fully informed and entirely comfortable with your treatment plan. Mr Thomas provides you with all the necessary information, outlines the benefits and risks of every option and supports you in making the choice that is right for your unique circumstances.
Mr Thomas also focus’s heavily on perfecting the patient experience. Historically, undergoing a joint replacement meant a lengthy hospital stay of up to a week. Today, thanks to advanced surgical techniques and modern recovery protocols, it is completely safe and often preferable to spend as little time in the hospital as possible. When it aligns with your preferences and clinical best interests, Mr Thomas regularly facilitates a safe discharge on the day of your surgery. This allows you to begin your rehabilitation in the comfort and familiarity of your own home.
A Foundation of Evidence-Based Practice
Outstanding clinical care relies on a strong foundation of medical research. With academic research Mr Thomas ensures his surgical techniques reflect the latest clinical evidence. His published work includes a 2022 randomised controlled trial exploring how functional CT-based planning, 3D templating and patient-specific instrumentation can improve accuracy in total hip replacements. He has also published research in 2018 assessing patient satisfaction following secondary patellar resurfacing after total knee arthroplasty, using data from the Trent and Wales Arthroplasty Registers. This dedication to continuous learning and evidence-based medicine means you receive care that is both innovative and proven to work.
